A 65-year-old woman was rescued safely after a dramatic two-hour operation near Pachpir Chowk in Kalewadi when her leg became trapped inside a PVC pipe connected to a water supply valve. The incident triggered a large-scale response involving multiple civic agencies and emergency teams. After receiving an alert at the main fire station in Pimpri, fire brigade personnel rushed to the location and discovered that the woman, identified as Smita Bhagwat Kasare, was stuck knee-deep inside a narrow 200mm-diameter PVC pipe nearly five feet below ground level. The difficult rescue operation required careful planning and specialised equipment to ensure her safety.

Fire officials stated that the woman’s leg had twisted awkwardly inside the pipe, preventing any movement and making the rescue operation highly challenging. Due to the complexity of the situation, additional manpower and advanced rescue machinery were immediately called to the site. Teams carefully dug around the pipe while using hydraulic cutters, battery-operated grinder cutters, petrol-engine-powered cutters, and other portable tools to free her safely. Throughout the operation, female officials of the fire department continuously spoke to the woman to keep her calm and conscious. She was also provided water and proper ventilation while rescue teams worked carefully around underground utility lines.

Several police officers, along with engineers from the water supply department, assisted the rescue teams by managing excavation work and controlling crowds gathered at the spot. Fire department officials said extreme caution was exercised during the operation to prevent any damage to nearby underground infrastructure, including water pipelines, electric cables, and PNG gas lines. The coordinated effort between the fire brigade, civic authorities, and police personnel helped ensure the woman was rescued without further injury. Officials praised the teamwork and swift response of all agencies involved in handling the difficult emergency situation in Kalewadi.
