A major traffic congestion was witnessed on Ghodbunder Road on May 9 after a bus met with an accident, causing severe disruption for commuters travelling towards Versova Village. Following the crash, a long queue of vehicles stretched across the route, leaving motorists stranded in nearly 20 minutes of slow-moving traffic. A video capturing the situation at the accident spot was shared on Instagram by the handle @gemsofmbmc. The footage showed traffic crawling towards Versova Village, while the opposite carriageway leading to Kapurbawdi Junction in Thane continued to witness smooth vehicular movement without any significant delays or congestion for commuters during peak travel hours.
In other traffic updates, the Thane Traffic Police have announced temporary road closures and traffic diversions on Ghodbunder Road due to girder installation work for a foot overbridge near Brahmand Junction and Mullabagh Bus Depot. The restrictions are being implemented to maintain public safety and ensure smoother traffic flow during the construction process.
According to the official notification, the work will be undertaken by RPS-PRS Joint Venture Pvt. Ltd. in two stages. The first phase will continue from 11:55 pm on May 8 until 11:55 pm on May 9, while the second phase will begin at 11:55 pm on May 9 and continue till 6 am on May 10. The order was issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Thane City, Pankaj Shirsat, under provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act to prevent congestion and regulate movement on the busy stretch.
As part of the restrictions, the route from Brahmand Signal towards Kapurbawdi through the Brahmand-Manpada road will remain completely shut for vehicular traffic during the specified period. Commuters travelling towards Kapurbawdi have been advised to turn left from Brahmand Signal and use Azad Nagar Road and Brahmand Circle. From there, motorists can proceed through Lodha Amara junction, take a right turn onto Kolshet-Dhokali Road, and continue towards Kapurbawdi and nearby areas.
The traffic police also stated that entry to the Manpada Bridge ramp near the MG Motors showroom on Ghodbunder Road will remain closed for all vehicles during the girder erection work. People travelling from Thane towards Ghodbunder Road have been asked to use the slip road near Manpada Bridge and take a left turn near Nagori Tea Stall. Vehicles can then move through Tikujiniwadi Circle and continue via the road near Variant Nilkanth Green towards Mullabagh Cut.
However, the restrictions will not apply to emergency and essential service vehicles, including ambulances, police vehicles, fire brigade vehicles, oxygen transport vehicles, and vehicles involved in green corridor operations. Thane Traffic Police have appealed to residents and motorists to cooperate with the authorities and follow the alternate routes to avoid inconvenience and heavy congestion during the construction work.
