Amid a growing water crisis, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has imposed a temporary ban on vehicle washing at service centres across the city until June 10. The move comes as water levels in reservoirs continue to decline, coupled with reduced groundwater availability in wells and borewells due to rising temperatures.

According to the civic body, the restriction covers all types of vehicles, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers, and is aimed at curbing non-essential water usage during a period of increasing demand and limited supply. Officials said the step is necessary to prevent a potential water shortage in the coming weeks.

Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao has directed strict enforcement of the order, warning that violations will attract penal action under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act. Authorities have been instructed to closely monitor service centres and take action against those failing to comply.

In addition, the TMC has advised commercial establishments to reduce unnecessary water consumption and prioritise water reuse in daily operations. The civic body has stressed the importance of conservation measures to manage the current strain on water resources.

Mayor Sharmila Pimpalolkar has appealed to residents to cooperate by adopting responsible water usage practices at home. Citizens have been urged to avoid wastage, including washing vehicles with excessive water, cleaning open spaces using running hoses, and leaving taps unattended.

The TMC noted that a combination of soaring temperatures and rising consumption has put significant pressure on the city’s water supply. It emphasised that public participation will be crucial in preventing severe shortages ahead of the monsoon.

Meanwhile, as part of its pre-monsoon preparedness, the civic body has intensified drain cleaning operations across Thane. On Tuesday, Mayor Sharmila Pimpalolkar and Commissioner Saurabh Rao inspected multiple locations to review the progress and quality of the ongoing work.
