The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has rescheduled the inauguration of certain operational sections of Metro Lines 9 and 2B, with the ceremony now confirmed for Tuesday, April 7. The launch was originally planned for an earlier date but had to be postponed due to the unavailability of key political leaders. As reported by the Indian Express, the initial inauguration was fixed for April 3. However, the event was deferred as senior leaders were engaged in official duties outside Maharashtra. Authorities then considered April 5 and April 6 as alternative options before ultimately finalising April 7 for the formal launch.The inauguration ceremony will be led by Devendra Fadnavis, accompanied by Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar. The programme is set to commence at 10 am in Dahisar, Mumbai, where the dignitaries will officially flag off the services. This event marks an important milestone in Mumbai’s expanding metro network, aimed at improving urban mobility and easing congestion across key routes in the city.During the inauguration, officials and dignitaries will undertake a journey across four stations included in Phase 1 of Metro Line 9. The inspection run will end at Kashigaon on Mira Road, offering a firsthand experience of the newly operational stretch. This segment is expected to significantly boost connectivity in Mumbai’s northern suburbs, making daily travel more efficient and reducing commuting time for thousands of passengers who rely on public transport for their routine journeys.In addition to Metro Line 9, a partial section of Metro Line 2B will also be opened later the same day. The launch will begin from Diamond Garden station in Chembur and extend across five stations up to Mandale. This newly operational stretch is anticipated to ease traffic congestion and provide a faster, more reliable transit option for commuters travelling between central and eastern Mumbai, further strengthening the city’s public transportation infrastructure.Line 9 (Red Line extension, Phase 1): This covers a 4.5 km stretch from Dahisar East to Kashigaon (Mira Road area), including stations like Dahisar, Pandhurang Wadi, Miragaon, and Kashigaon. It brings the first metro connectivity to the growing Mira-Bhayandar region and integrates seamlessly with Line 7 at Gundavli/Dahisar for smoother travel from northern suburbs.Line 2B (Yellow Line, Phase 1): This includes a 5.3–5.5 km section in the eastern suburbs, running from Diamond Garden (Chembur) to Mandale (near Mankhurd), with intermediate stations such as BSNL Metro and Shivaji Chowk. It enhances east-west connectivity, linking areas like Andheri West, BKC, Kurla, and Chembur.
