Aurangabad, Feb 20:

Around 50 per cent of seats has remained vacant in Engineering colleges of Marathwada for different reasons, including shrinking jobs.

It may be noted that the education system was paralysed with the spread of Novel coronavirus. The admission process was delayed because of COVID and Maratha reservation.

The admission process was completed by January end.

The colleges were reopened on February 15 as per the Government instructions. There are 22 engineering colleges with more than 6,000 seats in the eight districts. Of them, 45 pc to 50 pc seats are vacant in the colleges.

Commenting on vacant seats, Principal of PES College Dr Abhijit Wadekar said that currently, not many job opportunities are available for different reasons, including the COVID crisis.

“There is a misunderstanding among students that obtaining an engineering degree is not useful.

Many engineering institutes have quality education. Yet, students are going to Pune to take education as they can get a placement in a company easily or prepare for competitive examinations there. This affected admissions in the region. There is a question how to run the college in coming days,” he added.

Another reason is that the fee for the courses is also high.
