The health administration has utilised 8,137 Remdesivir injections worth Rs 3.5 crore on the treatment of 1,357 Covid-19 patients, so far. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recently announced that the injection is not so effective and has also not found helpful in preventing deaths of Covid patients. However, the local health experts opine the injection plays a vital role in the treatment of infected patients, according to them. Meanwhile, a question has arisen whether to use the injection in future or not?
The Coronavirus infection has spread in the district since March. In the initial days, the Remdesivir injection was considered as important to develop immunity in Covid patients. The hospital would administer six injections to each patient. There was a steep rise in patients in September. Hence, there was a demand of 400-500 injections daily in the city and other parts of the district. During the shortage, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) provided the injections by
controlling upon the distribution.
"A total of 8,638 injections were available in the district till November 23. So far, the health administrations had used 8,137 injections on the patients, and there is a stock of 465 injections," said the FDA joint commissioner Sanjay Kale.
Meanwhile, the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation''s municipal officer of health (MoH) Dr Neeta Padalkar said, " We have not received any instruction from the government regarding non-usage of the injection. It is proving useful in the treatment of patients." Adds the civil surgeon at District Civil Hospital (DCH) Dr S V Kulkarni said, " We have a stock of 2708 injections, out of 4,150, with us. It benefitted in the treatment of patients and not a single patient, who was administered the injection, died of it." The head of the medicine department at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Dr Meenakshi Bhattacharya said, " We were provided 4,000 injections, out of which, 3,400 were used, and 600 are in our stores. The injection was effective in the treatment of patients."
