Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar

The union Budget this year has emphasized the concept of integrated urban development. Significant allocations have been made for city development, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar may be included in these plans. Under the Smart City initiative, the city has already received nearly Rs 1,000 crore in central government grants. It now qualifies as a Tier-2 city. According to the 2011 census, the city’s population is around 1.4 million. The scheme targets cities offering moderate living costs, strong infrastructure, employment opportunities, and an improved lifestyle criteria that Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar meets.

In the 2026–27 budget, the central government announced the development of “City Economic Regions” (CERs) for Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, with an allocation of Rs 5,000 crore per CER over five years. Local leaders will need to make concentrated efforts to ensure Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar secures a share of this funding.

Potential for AIIMS and Medical Colleges

The scheme also focuses on establishing new medical colleges and institutions like AIIMS in eligible cities. Local leadership will play a key role in bringing these institutions to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The government will provide funds for comprehensive development of Tier-2 cities, positioning Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar as a new economic growth hub. The plan includes funding for e-governance, safe transport systems, water supply, and even sewage management.

Tier-2 classification advantage

Being classified as a Tier-2 city allows Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar to leverage central government allocations and developmental schemes.
