Closure of weekly markets will hit micro economy: MLC Kenekar
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:
The civic administration’s decision to shut weekly markets in Chikalthana, Jafargate and Shahanurmiya Dargah areas will adversely affect the city’s “street micro economy,” BJP MLC Sanjay Kenekar said in a memorandum submitted to divisional commissioner Jitendra Papalkar and district collector Deelip Swami.
He stated that thousands of families depend on these markets for their livelihood, including members of traditional occupational groups and various community sections. The decision, he said, could have serious social and economic consequences.
Kenekar demanded that the move to close the markets be temporarily stayed and that an alternative management be created after taking traders, farmers and citizens into confidence. While the civic body cited traffic congestion, sanitation and safety concerns, he said these issues should be addressed instead of shutting the markets without proper arrangements.
He also urged that feedback be sought from the marketing federation and that new market facilities be established before implementing any closure.
