Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:
The municipal corporation’s first regular general body (GB) meeting will be held on Friday at 11 am. Two proposals have been placed by the administration. Corporators have also sought information regarding the renaming of various squares and issues related to the question–answer session. Heated exchanges are expected over the information presented during the session. On Wednesday, the Mayor approved the supplementary agenda. It includes a proposal moved by BJP–Shinde Sena members congratulating the state government for renaming the city as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
The issue of renaming Aurangabad to Sambhajinagar had been politically debated in the municipal corporation from 1988 to 2020. In 2022, the then Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis officially renamed the city as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. At that time, there was no elected body in the corporation. In January 2026, municipal corporation elections were held and 115 corporators were elected. With a majority, the BJP–Shinde Sena alliance formed the government. In the very first regular meeting, deputy mayor Rajendra Janjal and BJP group leader Govind Kendre have tabled a private resolution in the supplementary agenda congratulating the state government for the renaming.
A proposal has also been submitted by Janjal and Kishor Nagare to name the zoological park being developed at Mitmita as “Chhatrapati Sambhiraje Bhosale Safari Park.” Another proposal by Raju Vaidya suggests installing a statue of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar at the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Garden in Shivajinagar.
Ganesh Lokhande has proposed allocating five acres of land for a crematorium at Padegaon. Meanwhile, Amit Bhuigal has raised concern over the slow progress of statue works at multiple locations Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar at Bhadkal Gate, Annabhau Sathe at Labour Colony, and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj at TV Centre.
