Decrease in number of Mucormycosis patients in the district

Aurangabad, June 15:

So far 984 patients with mucormycosis have been found in the district. Out of which 581 patients were cured, while 113 patients died during the treatment. In all, 28 people lost the sight of one eye and 6 people had their eyes removed. With the reduction in the incidence of corona, there is a possibility of the mucormycosis cases to reduce. At present, 290 patients in the district are currently receiving treatment.

Diabetic patients with corona disease are more likely to develop mucormycosis depending on their blood sugar levels and immunity. Patients with high blood sugar and corona patients exposed to high amounts of steroids have an increased risk of mucormycosis. Amphotericin B is administered to the patients. However, if the disease is exacerbated, the part is surgically removed through a nasal telescope surgery. This treatment process is time consuming, expensive and complicated. Dr Sunil Deshmukh, Dr Shubha Ghonshikar, Dr Vasant Pawar, Dr Shailesh Nikam, Dr Mahendra Katare's team in the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) will complete 100 surgeries in the next two days. The daily admission rate of ten to twelve patients has gone down from June 6. About 30 per cent of covid patients are still undergoing treatment. Experts in the GMCH say that the number of patients with mucormycosis in the district is declining while the graph of corona is also declining.

However, proper care and treatment is required. Medicines are being made available. People must approach doctors if symptoms appear, said Dr Sundar Kulkarni, district surgeon.
