Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The issue of bifurcation of Marathwada Divisional Commissionerate has surfaced again after ten years.

It may be noted that a decade passed since the then Divisional Commissioner Umakant Dangat Committee submitted its report on the trifurcation of the Commissionerate to the State Government. Whether the commissionerate should be divided into three districts- Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Latur and Nanded-or in two districts. This has sparked discussions in political circles and the question is whether the report on trifurcation will be cleared up during the tenure of the current government.

When MP Ashok Chavan was the Chief Minister, he took the initiative to have the Divisional Commissionerate in Nanded. This resulted in an increase in differences between Vilasrao Deshmukh and Chavan.

After the developments of the last one and a half decades, the issue of division of the Commissionerate has come up again due to the statement made by Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule in Nanded.

Bawankule went to a party meeting in Nanded two days ago. He said that the proposal to bifurcate the Divisional Commissionerate was under consideration.

Districts to be created

Marathwada was unconditionally included in the united Maharashtra, at that time there were six districts. Currently, there are eight districts in the region.

In 1981, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) was bifurcated to form Jalna district and later in 1999, Parbhani was bifurcated to form Hingoli district.

The issue of bifurcation of Latur, Beed and Nanded districts was under discussion in 2020.

The divisional commissionerate is located at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The Government has not yet taken a decision on the report given by the committee 10 years ago about the bifurcation of the commissionerate by increasing the number of districts.

Report on tri-division submitted

After the political dispute over whether to set up the Divisional Commissionerate in Nanded or Latur, the Government had appointed a committee under the leadership of retired civil servant Dr Umakant Dangat. When Dr Dangat asked, he replied that the report on the tri-division was submitted to the government.
