As World Kidney Day draws attention to the importance of kidney health and organ donation, the inspiring story of 75-year-old Hirabai Vhatkar has emerged as a powerful example of compassion and courage. Vhatkar recently donated one of her kidneys son in law advocate Ghanshyam Pole (57), giving him a new life after both his kidneys failed.
Bond beyond convention
In many families, the relationship between in-laws is often considered formal or slightly distant. However, when life hung in the balance, Hirabai Vhatkar rose above such social boundaries. Instead of being just a mother-in-law, she stood firmly like a mother and decided to donate her kidney to save his life, reflecting responsibility towards her daughter’s family.
Health deteriorates
Pole had been suffering from kidney-related problems for nearly five years. In the last two months, his condition worsened rapidly with severe weakness, nausea and loss of appetite. Medical tests later revealed that both his kidneys had permanently failed, making a transplant the only viable option.
A courageous decision
During this difficult time, Hirabai Vhatkar learnt that her blood group matched. Despite being 75 years old, she did not hesitate and came forward to donate her kidney. Her decision brought hope to the family when options seemed limited.
Successful transplant
Doctors confirmed that the transplant surgery was successful and both the donor and recipient are now stable and recovering well.
Medical experts also note that even if blood groups do not match, transplants are possible through advanced procedures, though they may involve higher costs. Stories like this highlight the importance of organ donation and the power of compassion.
Jayashree Pole, daughter of Hirabai Vhatkar, said:
“My mother has saved our lives. By donating her kidney, she did not just save one person but gave hope to our entire family. She thought that if she could help someone live a longer life, nothing could be more meaningful. She felt she had lived her life fully, but we still have a long journey ahead with our children. Her decision has given our family strength and a new beginning.”
“What she did for me is beyond thankfulness. She has turned into a saviour in our lives. At a time when I had almost lost hope, she stood firmly beside me and gave me a second chance at life. I will remain forever grateful for the courage and love she has shown.”

Breaking myths around kidney donation crucial
“Many people hesitate to donate a kidney due to fear or misconceptions. In reality, humans have two kidneys and a person can live a normal and healthy life even with one. Kidney donors usually do not require lifelong medicines. People often hesitate to come forward for donation because of fear, but organ donation can save lives and helping others is what society truly needs.”
