Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: District Collector Vinay Gowda G C on Monday issued orders to inspect all 63 small and large bridges in the district.

He directed that if traffic over any bridge becomes impossible due to flooding or any other reason, alternative routes should be identified in advance. He chaired a pre-monsoon review meeting of the Disaster Management Department in the Planning Committee Hall at the Collectorate office.

Along the banks of the Godavari river, a total of 43 villages fall below the blue line, including 18 in Paithan tehsil, Vaijapur (17) and Gangapur (eight). In the district, the bridges over the Godavari river on the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar–Ahilyanagar road at Kaygaon and the road from Paithan towards Shevgaon are affected by floods.

Villages that get inundated during floods include Paithan city, Kawsan, Dadegaon-Jahangir, Naygaon, and Wadwali and Navgaon in Paithan tehsil and Dongaon, Babtara, Lakhganga, Nandurdhok, Babhulgaon and Bajathan in Vaijapur.

Resources available with Disaster Mgmt Dept

The District Disaster Management Authority has five boats, 195 life jackets, 160 life buoys, 215 rescue material kits, 815 folding stretchers, 815 body cover bags, 132 safety helmets, 10 rescue crafts, 17 emergency lighting sets, 276 pairs of gumboots, 20 temporary tents and 5 binoculars. Lightning arrestor systems have been installed at 79 locations across the district.

A total of 28 persons have been trained in scuba diving in the district and 209 have been trained as Aapda Mitras (disaster friends). There are 12 shelter centres in the district.
