Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:
After a month-long break, the wedding season has kicked off from Tuesday. For the next three months, the city will once again resonate with wedding band music and Mangalashtak chants. The arrival of major national jewellery brands has also given a strong boost to the city’s ‘Golden City’ image.
Markets have been buzzing with wedding shopping for the past two weeks. Bridal sarees, groom’s sherwanis, Jodhpuri suits, and outfits for relatives are selling briskly.
Heavy rush from outstation guests
Nearly 3,000 clothing showrooms in the city including big national brands and traditional stores are attracting wedding guests from neighbouring districts. Families are spending Rs 60,000 to Rs 1 lakh per wedding on clothing and accessories. Many outstation visitors have been arriving for the past 15 days.
Gold shopping on the rise
With several reputed corporate jewellery brands now operating in the city, people are buying gold along with their wedding outfits. Jewellery shops are seeing a sharp increase in visitors from outside districts.
Malls and new gifting trends
Malls have made wedding shopping more convenient as customers get everything under one roof. Meanwhile, the tradition of gifting sarees as ‘aher’ is declining. People are now preferring bedsheets and carpets, with some families buying 200 to 800 pieces per wedding.
Marriage industry ready
Caterers and wedding halls have hired nearly 50,000 workers, mostly unemployed youth and college students for the season. The sector is expected to generate crores of rupees in business over the next three months.
