Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Yemeni citizen Mohammad Ahmed Ali (31), who was trying to get admission in Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University (Bamu) by staying in the country even after the expiry of his visa, was detained by the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of the police force. The action was taken on Wednesday night.

According to information given by the police, Ahmed, a citizen of Yemen, had entered India on a student visa in October 2014. He had registered in Bengaluru, Karnataka, at that time and obtained a visa. While he was living in Bengaluru, his visa expired in March 2017. After this, he left Bengaluru and lived elsewhere for two years.

A few years ago, he reached the city and settled in Jaisingpura in Begumpura. He started living there on a monthly rent of Rs 2,200. He was trying to get admission in Bamu. Sources said that he was in touch with youth from Yemen and other countries who had come to the city earlier.

As soon as the ATS got information about him, it detained him on the recommendation of Police Commissioner Pravin Pawar and Deputy Commissioner Ratnakar Navale. Deputy Commissioner Navale said that correspondence was done with the Yemeni embassy.

No action against landlord

Ahmed's father is a teacher in Yemen and he used to send money to his son for expenses every month. The Central and State intelligence agencies, the ATS, were unaware of this. It is mandatory to inform the police if foreigners and foreign nationals are staying on a monthly rent. However, the landlord where Ahmed is staying did not enter into any rental agreement. Moreover, the police were not informed about the stay of the foreign national. No action had been taken against this landlord till Thursday night.
