Shruti Ulfat Praises Authentic Festival Portrayal in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Calls It Key to Audience Connection
Shruti Ulfat, who plays the role of Vidya Poddar in Rajan Shahi's Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, which is produced under his banner Director's Kut Production, believes that it is very important for a show to stay authentic while depicting traditional festivals like Gangaur. She said, "That’s what makes the audience connect with the story and the culture. When you depict traditions with honesty—whether it’s the rituals, costumes, or emotions—it adds credibility and depth."
"Our show has always focused on getting the details right, and that effort reflects on screen. When something is shown authentically, it not only looks beautiful but also educates viewers about the true essence of the tradition," she added.
She feels that showcasing festivals like Gangaur helps audiences reconnect with Indian traditions and cultural roots. She said, "Many people may not even be aware of certain festivals, especially those that are region-specific. Through the show, they get to learn about them and understand their significance."
"Even for Indians living abroad, it brings a sense of connection and belonging. It reminds them of home, of family, and of the traditions they may not be able to celebrate regularly. Festivals like Gangaur highlight togetherness, relationships, and cultural values, helping people reconnect with their roots in a meaningful way," she added.
Asked if there were any specific scenes during the Gangaur track that were particularly challenging, Shruti said, "The entire sequence is quite demanding, especially because of the weather. The last time we shot at the same location, the temperature was close to 45–50 degrees, and this year it was around 40 degrees. Thankfully, there was some breeze due to recent rains, which gave us a bit of relief."
"We had to take extra care—staying hydrated, drinking lemon water and coconut water, eating fruits like cucumber and watermelon, applying sunscreen, and even carrying umbrellas between shots. Despite the challenges, the end result always turns out beautiful, which makes it all worth it," she added.
She mentioned that personally, Gangaur has been memorable for her because before joining the show, she wasn’t very aware of this festival. She added, "But now, I’ve not only learned about it but actually experienced it. That in itself has been very enriching."
Applauding Rajan on his eye for detail and authentic storytelling, she said, "It reflects in every aspect of the show—the storytelling, the sets, the costumes, and the overall vibe. There is a strong focus on keeping everything as real and relatable as possible, which is why the audience connects so deeply with the show. Whether it’s everyday family moments or grand festive sequences like Gangaur, everything is presented with honesty and attention to detail."
"That commitment to authenticity is one of the biggest strengths of Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, and it’s what makes it stand out even after so many years," Shruti added.
