Hair Fall: When Is It Normal and When Should You See a Doctor?

Long, soft, and shiny hair adds significantly to our beauty. Everyone desires such beautiful, long hair. But due to some of our own mistakes, this wish remains unfulfilled. Due to changing lifestyles and nutritional deficiencies, the problem of hair fall has increased significantly these days. Seeing hair fall out from combing, your pillow, or the drain can understandably trigger the fear of baldness.

It's important to distinguish normal hair shedding from hair loss caused by an underlying health issue.

When is hair fall considered normal?

According to a report by Healthline, losing 50 to 100 hairs every day is considered completely normal. This is because our body is constantly renewing itself. The body is constantly repairing itself. Just as dead skin cells are shed, the scalp sheds old hair to make room for new hair. We have about 100,000 hair follicles on our head, and each hair has a different growth cycle. Therefore, it is natural for some hair to fall out every day, and there is no need to worry about it.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, it is normal for a person to lose approximately 50 to 100 hairs per day. Hair follicles go through a process. The first stage is the anagen stage, in which the hair grows, and then comes the telogen stage, also called the resting stage. This is when hair fall begins. This cycle of hair growth and shedding continues as long as the hair follicles remain active and new hair continues to grow. Normally, healthy people have 80,000 to 120,000 hairs on their heads. People with short hair experience fewer problems with hair fall. People with long hair experience this problem more often.

What if you suddenly start losing a lot of hair?

Sometimes, a large amount of hair starts falling out suddenly. This condition is called telogen effluvium. This is a type of temporary hair loss, which is mainly caused by stress or physical changes. For example, in situations like high fever, after childbirth, or sudden weight loss, the body stops hair growth to conserve energy. The hair doesn't fall out immediately, but after 2-3 months, it starts falling out in large quantities. The reassuring thing is that most of the time this hair loss is temporary, and the hair starts growing back after some time.

When is hair loss a cause for concern?

The appearance of circular bald patches on the scalp, or the skin feeling very smooth in those areas, could be a symptom of alopecia areata.

  • Receding hairline or a widening parting indicates pattern baldness.
  • If hair loss is accompanied by redness, pain, or burning sensation on the scalp, it should not be ignored.
  • If hair is falling out from a specific area of the head and new hair is not growing there, it is necessary to consult an expert.
