Dhul Hijjah, one of the holiest months in the Islamic calendar, is set to begin soon, with the dates of Eid al-Adha (Bakrid) in 2026 depending on the sighting of the crescent moon. According to astronomical calculations, the moon-sighting dates in Gulf countries and the Indian subcontinent are likely to differ by one day this year. The festival commemorates the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim and is observed by Muslims around the world.
Moon Sighting Predictions in Saudi Arabia and UAE
The crescent moon marking the beginning of Dhul Hijjah is expected to be sighted in most Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), on Saturday, May 16, 2026. If the moon is sighted, the month of Dhul Hijjah will begin on May 17.

Based on these calculations, Eid al-Adha is likely to be celebrated in Saudi Arabia and the UAE on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. However, the final confirmation will be issued by the respective moon-sighting committees and the supreme courts.
Expected Moon Sighting Date in India
In India, the moon sighting will take place a day after the Gulf countries. There is a strong possibility that the Dhul Hijjah 2026 crescent will be sighted on Sunday, May 17, 2026. If the moon is sighted that Sunday evening, the first day of Dhul Hijjah in India will fall on Monday, May 18.
In that case, Bakrid is expected to be celebrated in India on Wednesday, May 27, 2026. If the moon is not sighted on May 17, the Bakra Eid 2026 will be celebrate on May 28 instead.
Significance of Bakrid and Hajj
The sighting of the Dhul Hijjah moon also marks the beginning of the key rituals associated with the annual Hajj. Eid al-Adha is observed on the 10th day of the month and symbolises sacrifice, devotion, charity and community unity. The first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah are considered especially significant for prayers, fasting and charity (Sadka) in Islam.
Although astronomical calculations provide tentative dates, the final decision depends on the physical sighting of the moon. In India, religious bodies, including the Jama Masjid in New Delhi, the Markazi Ruyat-e-Hilal Committee in Mumbai, and Hilal committees in Lucknow, will officially announce the date of Bakrid only after confirming the moon sighting.
Citizens have been advised to wait for announcements from local religious authorities regarding the final date of Eid al-Adha.
