Gudi Padwa 2026: Which Color Cloth Is Auspicious For Gudi? Check Muhurat, Rituals And Puja Vidhi
The beginning of the Maharashtrian New Year is Gudi Padwa. On this day, we erect a Gudi outside the house as a symbol of victory. Gudi is not just a religious ritual, but it is a symbol of prosperity, health and victory. Detailed information about the Gudi clothing, worship rituals and Muhurat for this year's Gudi Padwa has been given.
Which color of clothing will be auspicious for Gudi?
The scriptures have mentioned the importance of specific colors for Gudi. You can choose one of the following colors according to your preference:
Orange or Saffron: This color symbolizes purity, sacrifice and energy. It is considered the most traditional and auspicious color for Gudi.
Yellow: Yellow is a symbol of happiness, prosperity and knowledge. Yellow clothing is great for increasing positive energy in the house.
Red: Red is a symbol of strength and good fortune. This color is considered very auspicious when starting a new task.
Dark Green: Green is the color of nature and consciousness. Green clothes during the period of new growth symbolize progress.
Note: If possible, avoid using white or black for Gudi. Although white is the color of peace, bright colors are preferable as Gudi is a symbol of 'victory'.
Proper method of erecting Gudi
It is considered best to erect Gudi immediately after sunrise. This year, due to the decay of Tithi, there has been some confusion regarding the date. Although Chaitra Shuddha Pratipada is a decaying Tithi, it does not diminish the importance of this day at all since it is one of the three and a half Muhurtas. This year, Gudi Padwa will be celebrated on Thursday, March 19, 2026. March 18 is the new moon of Phalguna and it ends on the morning of March 19. Therefore, according to the scriptures, March 19 is the right day to start the new year.
Time to erect the Gudi:
On the morning of March 19, the 'Kshaya' of Chaitra Shuddha Pratipada is observed. This means that the new year's date applies only after the end of the new moon. The new moon will end at 6:52 am. After that, that is, after 6:53 am, you can erect the Gudi anytime.
Preparation of the Gudi:
- A tall bamboo stick (cleanly washed).
- Silk or rich new clothes.
- Neem twig and mango leaves.
- Flower garland (with knot - sugar garland).
- Copper or silver copper (kalash).
2. Arrangement:
- Tie a silk cloth with lace, rope or twine at the top of the bamboo.
- Tie neem leaves, mango leaves and a flower garland on it.
- Draw a 'swastika' of sandalwood or kunkwa on the copper and place it on the tip of a copper bamboo.
- Bhimseni Camphor: Why is genuine Bhimseni Camphor the best? Learn the easy way to identify its purity
3. Setting up the Gudi:
- Clean the space near the entrance of the house or in the window where sunlight falls and draw a rangoli.
- Place the Gudi firmly on a platform or high place. The urn of the Gudi should be facing the sky.
- Worship and offering
- Puja: After setting up the Gudi, offer turmeric-sukhum, akshta and flowers to it. Wave incense and lamps and offer obeisance.
- Offering: Offer jaggery-coconut or shrikhand-puri to the Gudi.
- Prasad (Importance of Neem): On the day of Padwa, mix neem leaves, jaggery, cumin, ochre and salt and consume it. This mixture is considered very beneficial for health and boosting the immune system.
