Mahashivratri 2026: Don’t Make These Mistakes While Worshipping Lord Shiva, Essential Puja Rules
Mahashivratri is one of the important auspicious event in Hindu calendar. It celebrates Lord Shiva's reunion with goddess Parvati, teaches us to appreciate all aspects of life equally. Our traditions keep the greatness of such deities alive, encouraging a balanced perspective. On Mahashivratri, devotees visit Shiva temples to perform Abhishek and Puja.
Temples across the country host special religious and cultural events. When worshipping Shiva on this day, it's important to follow the proper rituals carefully. This year Maharashivratri falls on February 15, 2026. Its is said that lord shiva's puja is very tough and one should not do any kind of mistakes. Shiva worship is considered incomplete without Belpatra. Even if nothing else is possible, one Belpatra should be offered to Shiva with a sincere heart, it is believed that by doing so, one can attain the complete merit of worship.
Some beliefs, one should be careful while offering anything to Shiva. Nothing except Belpatra should be offered on the Shivalinga. Flowers and offerings should be offered in front of the Shivalinga. It is believed that the nevaidya offered on the Shivalinga is not accepted. It is said that this is considered a defect in worship. According to religious texts, Shiva's Abhishek should only be done in the morning. A conch shell should not be used when worshipping Shiva because Shiva killed the demon Shankhchud, and the conch is associated with him. Avoid performing Abhishek or offering water at a Mahadev temple in the evening.
The following flowers should not be offered to Shiva: saffron, dupaharika, malati, champa, jasmine, and jui. Acceptable offerings include betel leaves, bhang leaves, dhotriya leaves, ghongal leaves, blue lotus, ashoka leaves, amla leaves, kanheri leaves, kadamba leaves, brahmi leaves, and aghada leaves. Use whole, unbroken rice grains (Akshats) as broken grains are considered impure.
The pradakshina (circumambulation) at a Mahadev temple is different from other temples. Do not complete a full circle to avoid crossing the water offered on the Shivling. This water is believed to have immense energy that should not be crossed.
