The State Transport Department was founded on March 1, 1940, to oversee road transport. Ever since, March 1 has been designated as "Transport Day." The foundation ceremony for the four-story "Parivahan Bhavan" was held at Sir Pochkhanwala Road in Worli to commemorate this milestone.
The 12,800-square-meter new structure will have a four-story underground parking structure that can accommodate 150 four-wheelers. It is anticipated that the construction will be finished in two and a half years.
The transport department has never had its headquarters, even though it brings in Rs. 15,000 crore for the state annually. The department has been based out of a rented building for the past 85 years. In his first meeting as minister of transportation, Sarnaik presented the idea for a distinct headquarters.
