Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday inaugurated the ‘Rajmata Jijau’ smart bus service in Mumbai, marking a significant step towards modernising the state’s public transport system. He was joined by Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, along with other senior leaders, during the launch. The leaders also took a short ride in the newly introduced bus, symbolising the official rollout of the service. The launch event, held at the state legislature complex, featured traditional performances and cultural presentations, creating a vibrant and celebratory atmosphere.

The bus service has been named after Jijabai, acknowledging her immense contribution in shaping the life and ideals of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Officials stated that the name reflects Maharashtra’s commitment to blending technological advancement with its deep-rooted cultural and historical legacy. The ceremony witnessed the presence of several prominent ministers, including Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, Environment Minister Pankaja Munde, and Education Minister Dadaji Bhuse, among others.

According to officials, the ‘Rajmata Jijau’ smart bus service will introduce nearly 3,000 advanced buses in a phased manner across the state. These buses are designed to enhance passenger safety, comfort, and overall travel efficiency. The new fleet will complement Maharashtra’s existing transport services such as ‘Shivneri’, ‘Shivshahi’, ‘Shivai’, ‘Hirkani’, and ‘Yashwanti’, further strengthening the state’s public transportation network.

Officials emphasised that the initiative goes beyond transportation, representing the state’s progress while preserving its traditions and values.

The ‘Rajmata Jijau’ buses are equipped with a range of modern features aimed at ensuring a safe and comfortable journey. These include a 3×2 seating arrangement with a capacity of 56 passengers, CCTV cameras for enhanced security, GPS tracking systems, panic buttons for emergencies, public announcement systems, and electronic route display boards.
