With the onset of summer, residents across Mumbai and its surrounding metropolitan belt were reported to be grappling with rising temperatures and oppressive humidity. The India Meteorological Department was said to have issued a Yellow Alert for March 4 and 5 covering the districts of Thane, Palghar and Raigad, cautioning about hot and humid conditions. Forecasters indicated that maximum temperatures could climb to 37 degrees Celsius during this period. Officials further noted that March was likely to record above-average temperatures, while April and May were expected to bring heatwave-like conditions similar to those experienced during the summer of 2025 across the region.

According to the department’s local outlook for the next 48 hours, Mumbai city and its suburbs were expected to experience maximum temperatures near 36 degrees Celsius and minimum temperatures around 22 degrees Celsius, with largely clear skies prevailing. IMD Mumbai scientist Sushma Nair was quoted as saying that March was unlikely to witness official heatwave conditions, although April and May could see such extremes across Mumbai and neighbouring districts. She reportedly added that shifting wind patterns might cause a slight dip in temperatures at times, but overall readings in March would largely remain above 30 degrees Celsius.

The IMD’s Hot Weather Outlook for March to May 2026 suggested that most parts of the country were very likely to experience above-normal minimum and maximum temperatures. The report stated that an increased number of heatwave days was anticipated over large areas of east and east-central India, as well as several parts of the southeastern peninsula and pockets of northwest and west-central India during this period. It further mentioned that regions including West Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, parts of Maharashtra, eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, north interior Karnataka and sections of north Tamil Nadu were expected to record above-normal heatwave days.

Meanwhile, Mumbai’s air quality was reported to have deteriorated again. After recording a satisfactory Air Quality Index (AQI) of 64 on Monday, the city’s AQI reportedly fell to 111 on Tuesday, moving into a poorer category, with several monitoring stations showing readings above 150. Data from the Sameer App of the Central Pollution Control Board indicated that areas such as Kandivali West registered 166, Powai and Mulund West recorded 155 each, Deonar showed 146, Bandra Kurla Complex logged 136, Chembur measured 128 and Sewri stood at 120, reflecting declining air quality across multiple localities.
