Nagpur Violence: 38-Year-Old Man Injured in Riots Dies During Treatment at Mayo Hospital

Irfan Ansari, a 38-year-old welder, became the first casualty of the recent riots in Central Nagpur after succumbing to his injuries at Mayo Hospital on Saturday. Ansari, a resident of Garib Nawaz Nagar, was brutally assaulted on Monday while heading to Nagpur railway station to board a train.

According to reports, rioters intercepted and attacked Ansari near the riot-hit area between Geetanjali Chowk and Hansapuri Khadan. Critically injured, he was found on the road by police personnel, who rushed him to Mayo Hospital. Despite battling severe internal injuries for six days, Ansari died on Saturday.

Another injured person is recovering at New Era Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. 

Chief Minister Promises Stern Action

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that any damage caused during the violent clashes on March 17 would be recovered from the rioters. Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Fadnavis said, “Whatever damage has happened will be recovered from the rioters. If they do not pay, their property will be sold for recovery. Wherever required, bulldozers will also be used.”

Fadnavis reviewed the incident with police officers, confirming that the clashes began after a replica of Aurangzeb's grave was burned in the morning. Rumors then spread that a verse from the Quran was inscribed on the replica, leading to stone-pelting and arson.

So far, 104 people have been arrested in connection with the violence. Based on CCTV footage, police are identifying and apprehending those involved. The chief minister also warned that individuals spreading rumors on social media would be treated as co-accused in the case. Police have already deleted 68 social media posts linked to the unrest.

Ongoing Investigation and Arrests

Earlier on Friday night, police arrested Hamid Engineer, working president of the Minorities Democratic Party, in connection with the violence. Deputy Commissioner of Police Lohit Matani confirmed the arrest. Additionally, the Nagpur Court directed a medical examination for Fahim Khan, the prime accused, after he alleged mistreatment by police. His magisterial custody remand has been recorded, and the court reserved the right for police custody remand.

Nagpur Police Commissioner Ravinder Singal assured that investigations are being conducted impartially. “So far, 99 people have been arrested, and action is being taken against them. We are conducting an unbiased investigation,” Singal said.
