BMC to Build Iconic Clock Towers at Mumbai’s Key Entry Points Under Gateway Project

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated groundwork for the ambitious Mumbai Gateway project, unveiled in the civic Budget 2025-26. The initiative focuses on building iconic clock towers and upgrading the appearance of key entry points into Mumbai, including Dahisar, Vashi, Airoli, and Mulund. Among these, the Airoli checkpoint has been prioritised as a pilot site, with construction expected to begin there first. This initial phase will serve as a model for similar developments at other locations. The project is designed to create visually striking entrances that symbolise the city’s character while improving the overall aesthetics of these important transit zones.

During a review meeting chaired by Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde at the BMC headquarters, officials were instructed to complete the detailed blueprint for the beautification plan within the next 15 days. The civic body plans to execute the project through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, using Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds for financial support. The concept of installing grand clock towers at the city’s borders was first introduced in the February 25 budget presentation to the newly constituted standing committee, aiming to establish distinctive and memorable entry points across Mumbai.

The Mumbai Gateway project envisions grand entrance structures, prominent clock towers, and extensive beautification of surrounding precincts. The primary objective is to showcase Mumbai’s rich heritage, architectural identity, and visual appeal while also boosting tourism. Authorities also intend to monetise the project by utilising land at former toll plazas that became redundant after the implementation of GST. Additionally, the plan includes integrating broader area development, improving infrastructure, and increasing green cover through landscaping and horticulture initiatives, thereby creating welcoming, sustainable, and aesthetically enhanced gateways into the city.
