In a shocking incident reported from Jogeshwari in Mumbai, a cigarette vendor was allegedly dragged for nearly 100 metres by a group of four people after he demanded payment of ₹870 for cigarettes. The incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday and has sparked outrage after a video of the incedent went viral on social media.
According to the Oshiwara Police, a case has been registered against four accused, including a woman, under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act. The accused car driver, who had fled the scene, has been arrested, while three others remain absconding.
The complainant, a resident of Jogeshwari, works as a roadside cigarette seller during the night. On Tuesday around 4 am, he was selling cigarettes near New Link Road, close to Lucky Biryani Hotel, when a white WagonR car stopped near him. The vehicle had three men and one woman inside.
The group purchased cigarettes worth ₹870, but refused to pay when asked. Instead, they allegedly started arguing with the vendor. During the altercation, the woman grabbed the vendor by his collar while another accused physically assaulted him.
As the victim’s hand was still held, the driver suddenly accelerated the car, dragging him for nearly 100 metres. Despite being aware of the danger to his life, the accused continued driving, putting him at serious risk.
The entire incident was captured on mobile phones by bystanders, and the video quickly went viral on social media, prompting swift police action.
Upon receiving information, Oshiwara Police traced the victim, recorded his statement, and registered an FIR against all four accused. Within hours, the driver was apprehended, while efforts are underway to arrest the remaining three accused.
Police officials confirmed that the dispute arose over a payment of ₹870 and said senior officers have taken serious note of the matter. A special operation has been launched to nab the absconding accused, and strict action has been assured against all those involved.
