Mumbai: Atal Setu Sees Over 2 Crore Vehicle Crossings, Trans Harbour Link Road Becomes Major Commuter Route

Marking a significant achievement in the city’s infrastructure journey, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority announced that India’s longest sea bridge, Atal Setu, has witnessed more than 2 crore vehicle movements since it opened in January 2024. Sharing the update on social media, the authority revealed that the 20,000,316th vehicle crossed the bridge on March 27, 2026. This milestone highlights the increasing reliance on the sea link, which has rapidly emerged as a vital transportation corridor connecting key parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and easing travel for thousands of commuters daily.

The data released by the authority shows that private vehicles dominate traffic on the bridge, accounting for nearly 91 per cent of the total crossings. Out of the overall figure, private cars alone contributed 1,81,95,718 trips, reflecting a strong preference among daily commuters. Meanwhile, light commercial vehicles, minibuses and buses recorded 5,98,525 crossings, indicating steady usage by smaller transport services. In addition, medium, heavy and oversized vehicles accounted for 12,06,073 trips, demonstrating the bridge’s role in facilitating goods movement and supporting commercial transportation across the region with improved efficiency and reduced congestion on alternative routes.

Inaugurated by Narendra Modi on January 13, 2024, the Atal Setu connects Sewri in South Mumbai to Chirle in Navi Mumbai, significantly transforming travel between the two locations. The sea bridge has reduced the journey time from nearly one hour to less than 20 minutes, offering faster and smoother connectivity. Officials described the project as more than just infrastructure, calling it a lifeline that has reshaped commuting patterns, strengthened logistics networks, boosted economic activity, lowered fuel consumption and improved overall regional connectivity across Mumbai and surrounding areas.

According to officials, the impact of the project extends far beyond transportation, as it has played a crucial role in driving economic growth and enhancing efficiency in movement across the metropolitan region. They emphasised that within a little over two years, the bridge has not only facilitated vehicle movement but has also supported trade and commerce, reduced fuel expenses, eased congestion and set new standards for modern infrastructure. The authority noted that this achievement reflects the broader benefits of strategic development, positioning the sea link as a symbol of Maharashtra’s progressive vision and commitment to building world-class infrastructure for the future.
