Tensions over the Hindi-Marathi language issue resurfaced in Mumbai after a confrontation broke out in Dahisar’s Ganpat Patil Nagar area during a public interaction programme. The event, organised by Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam to engage with auto-rickshaw drivers, was disrupted by protests from Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers, leading to a tense situation in the locality.

According to reports, the situation escalated into pushing, sloganeering, and chaos, with allegations also surfacing of an attack on Nirupam’s vehicle. The unrest is said to have stemmed from the state government’s decision to make Marathi language usage mandatory for auto and taxi drivers.

Sources said that a group of auto drivers opposing the decision had gathered to express their discontent. Meanwhile, MNS workers reached the spot and launched a protest in support of enforcing Marathi, bringing the two groups face-to-face and triggering tensions for some time.

Police have registered cases against both sides in connection with the incident. MNS vice-president Nayan Kadam, along with several local workers, has been detained. Authorities managed to bring the situation under control and have initiated further investigation.

Amid the controversy, the state government has announced that from May 1, it will be mandatory for auto and taxi drivers to communicate in Marathi. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has warned that licences of drivers unable to read or write Marathi could be cancelled. The decision has drawn opposition from some unions, which have also threatened a strike from May 4.

In the backdrop of these developments, MNS has intensified its stance, taking to the streets in support of Marathi enforcement. Following the Dahisar incident, concerns are being raised about the issue escalating further. Police have increased security deployment in the area to maintain law and order.
