Mumbai Coastal Road Accident: Woman Injured After High-Speed Mercedes Crashes Into Car Inside Tunnel; Case Registered
A high-speed luxury car caused havoc on the Coastal Road in the early hours of Monday after a Mercedes, allegedly driven by a minor, rammed into an EcoSport car from behind inside a tunnel. A woman was seriously injured in the accident, while two others sustained minor injuries. Police have registered a case against the car owner, his granddaughter and the minor driver.
According to police, the accident occurred around 1.45 am inside the Coastal Road tunnel while the vehicles were heading towards South Mumbai. The speeding Mercedes hit the EcoSport from the rear, causing it to crash into a Honda City moving ahead. The impact led to chaos inside the tunnel for some time.
The EcoSport was being driven by 36-year-old Prasann Mopkar, a resident of Mira Road. His wife and mother-in-law were also in the vehicle. The family was travelling from Borivali to Colaba for dinner at Bade Miyan restaurant. Mopkar and his mother-in-law suffered minor injuries, while his wife sustained a serious nose injury. She was immediately admitted to GT Hospital for treatment.
Further investigation revealed that the Mercedes is registered in the name of a senior citizen businessman residing in Agripada. His 18-year-old granddaughter had allegedly taken the car keys from home and allowed her 17-year-old friend to drive the vehicle. Due to excessive speed, the minor driver lost control of the car inside the tunnel, leading to the accident.
A DB Marg police officer said that preliminary investigations have found no evidence of alcohol consumption, but confirmed that the vehicle was being driven at a very high speed, which caused the driver to lose control. Police have registered a case against the car owner, his granddaughter and the minor driver for rash and negligent driving and under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. Further investigation is underway.
