A major tragedy was averted at CSMT after a motorman applied emergency brakes upon realising that a fast local train from Badlapur had been mistakenly routed to Platform 5 instead of Platform 4, where another train was already standing. This incident occurred on April 21 evening during the peak hours due to technical glitch. Video of this incident is all over the internet creating the serious concern about the passengers safety.
Following this incident, and as a precautionary measure, train operations on Platforms No. 5 through 8 were completely suspended. The local train that had ended up on the wrong track was safely backed out. With this process now complete, train services are gradually being restored.
As train services on the fast line came to a standstill during peak hours, massive crowds of passengers gathered at CSMT and other stations. The railway administration has taken serious cognizance of this technical malfunction and has initiated an inquiry to determine the exact cause behind the signal failure. Currently, the process of backing out the train has been completed, and the stalled train services have resumed.
Local train services were running late at least 25 to 30 minutes on Tuesday morning, April 21, amid rainfall and thunderstorms in Navi Mumbai and Raigad district. Unseasonal rainfall and train delays frustrate early morning commuters and office goers during peak hours.
