Western Railway on Wednesday announced a major expansion of its suburban network in Mumbai by introducing 15-coach and air-conditioned local train services from May 1, 2026. The decision has been taken to improve passenger comfort and increase carrying capacity on heavily crowded routes. According to railway officials, 17 existing 12-coach non-AC suburban trains will be converted into 15-coach services, while 12 new AC local services will also be added to the network. With this development, the number of 15-coach suburban trains operating on the Western Railway corridor will rise from 227 to 244, providing relief to thousands of daily commuters travelling across Mumbai and adjoining regions.

In a significant development, the Virar-Dahanu Road section will receive 15-coach train services for the first time. A total of eight such services will be introduced on this route, which witnesses heavy passenger traffic every day. Railway authorities said the move is expected to improve travel convenience and increase seating and standing capacity for commuters using this busy corridor. However, officials clarified that these longer trains will not stop at Grant Road, Charni Road, and Marine Lines stations in either direction because of operational limitations. Instead, the trains will take a double halt at Dadar station on platform number 4 to ensure smoother passenger movement and boarding arrangements.

Complete details of the service:

Western Railway will also enhance its AC suburban services by converting 12 existing non-AC local trains into fully air-conditioned services. Following this addition, the number of AC trains on weekdays will increase from 133 to 145, while weekend services will rise from 106 to 118. Railway authorities stated that the expansion aims to offer more comfortable travel options, particularly during rush hours when overcrowding becomes a major issue. Despite the introduction of additional 15-coach and AC services, the total number of suburban train operations will remain unchanged. Officials added that only minor timetable revisions may be carried out to accommodate the upgraded services without causing major disruptions to existing schedules.
