Mumbai’s renowned dabbawala network continues to receive international praise for its exceptional efficiency and discipline. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde described the service as a true representation of the city’s strong work culture and operational brilliance. She emphasised that the dabbawalas are not just food delivery workers but a symbol of dedication and consistency. Their unique system, built on trust and coordination, has earned admiration worldwide. The Mayor stated that their work reflects Mumbai’s spirit of resilience and commitment, making them a globally recognised example of how simple yet structured systems can achieve extraordinary results without relying on advanced technology.

Mayor Tawde highlighted that the dabbawala system stands as a “living example” of management excellence, driven by punctuality, teamwork, and reliability. She explained that their service goes beyond delivering lunchboxes, showcasing a disciplined network that functions with near-perfect accuracy. According to her, the dabbawalas embody Mumbai’s service-oriented values and have become ambassadors of the city’s hardworking ethos. Their operational model is studied across the world for its precision and simplicity. She noted that their ability to maintain consistency over decades demonstrates the strength of human coordination and commitment, proving that dedication and organisation can rival even the most advanced logistical systems.

On March 25, the Mayor visited the Mumbai Dabbawala International Experience Centre at Rizvi College in Bandra West as part of a goodwill initiative. During the visit, she explored various sections of the facility and closely examined the detailed processes involved in sorting, coding, and distributing thousands of tiffins daily. The centre offers an engaging experience through digital installations, a heritage display, and a virtual reality zone that narrates the history and growth of the dabbawala network. She also interacted with an AI-based feature that allows visitors to visualise themselves as dabbawalas, providing a deeper understanding of their daily operations.

During her interaction with members of the community, Mayor Tawde noted that the dabbawala service has been running uninterrupted for over 135 years, making it an essential part of Mumbai’s daily routine. Delivering nearly one lakh tiffins with remarkable accuracy, the network continues to support a vast number of citizens. She added that their tradition is deeply influenced by the Warkari philosophy, which emphasises devotion, discipline, and service to society. The Mayor pointed out that their system is widely studied by management professionals across the globe as a model of efficiency, highlighting its relevance even in the modern business environment.

Speaking about future initiatives, the Mayor announced plans to honour the dabbawalas’ contribution by designing one of Mumbai’s proposed entrance gateways around their theme. She also revealed that around 105 e-bikes will be introduced to improve their operational efficiency and ease their daily work. She assured that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation would continue to support their welfare and strengthen initiatives at the experience centre. In a related incident, dabbawala member Dinesh Arde suffered a heart attack and was admitted to Dr. R. N. Cooper Hospital. The Mayor visited him personally and confirmed that his condition is now stable.

Providing historical context, Kiran Gavande stated that the dabbawala service, which began in 1890, once handled nearly twice the current number of deliveries before the COVID-19 pandemic. He explained that despite the challenges during the crisis, strong support from Mumbaikars and well-wishers worldwide helped sustain their livelihoods. The system is now gradually regaining its pace. Gavande also acknowledged the support of Devendra Fadnavis and Shrikant Bharatiya in establishing the experience centre, which has evolved into a knowledge hub for students, tourists, and management experts globally.
