Mumbai: Men Posing as Police Rob Kenyan Woman of Rs 66.45 Lakh in in Broad Daylight

A gang posing as police personnel has once again thrown a direct challenge to law and order in Mumbai. In a shocking daylight robbery, two unidentified men impersonating police officers looted ₹66.45 lakh in cash from a Kenyan woman trader in the Fort area and fled the spot on a motorcycle.

Based on the complaint of the foreign national, the MRA Marg Police have registered a case and launched a manhunt for the accused with the help of CCTV footage from the area.

According to police, the sensational incident took place on January 27, 2026, in the afternoon outside the Alana Centre building on MG Road in Fort. The victim, Sumayya Mohamud Abdi (26), a resident of Nairobi, Kenya, is engaged in the business of children’s garments. She had arrived in India on January 26 for business purposes and was staying at Al Ibrahim Hotel on Mohammed Ali Road.

On the morning of January 27, Sumayya went shopping for garments at Mohammed Ali Road and later at Kalbadevi. Her four associates — Hoden, Ifra, Halima and Farqiya — handed over ₹58 lakh in cash to her for payment of goods already purchased. In addition, Sumayya was carrying her own ₹8 lakh. The total amount of ₹66.45 lakh was kept in two separate bags.

At around 2 pm, Sumayya and her associate Hoden were travelling by taxi to their hotel in Colaba when a motorcycle rider stopped their cab in the Fort area. One of the two men on the bike claimed to be a police officer and said he needed to inspect the vehicle. As soon as the taxi driver stepped out, the second accused, wearing a face mask, approached the women seated at the back and questioned them about the bags.

Under fear and pressure, the two women handed over the bags containing cash to the accused. The men then told them to come to the police station and fled with the cash-filled bag on the motorcycle.

The shaken women immediately reached their hotel in Colaba. After raising an alarm, the taxi driver dialled the police emergency number 100 and informed the police. The police arrived at the spot, recorded the complaint and initiated an investigation.

During the probe, it was found that one of the accused was wearing a helmet, while the other had covered his face with a black mask to avoid identification. The daring daylight robbery in the high-security Fort area has sent shockwaves through the police department.

Police are scanning CCTV footage from nearby areas and intensifying the search for the accused based on details of the taxi and other leads. The incident, involving a foreign national being robbed in broad daylight, has raised serious questions over Mumbai’s law and order and the safety of travellers. Further investigation is underway.
