Mumbai Police Crack ₹7.88 Crore Jewellery Theft in Borivali; 4 Arrested

Mumbai Police have cracked the multi-crore jewellery theft reported at a shop in Borivali West and arrested four accused in connection with the case, while a minor has been taken into custody and sent to an Juvenile Centre. The case was registered on January 15, 2026, under Sections 306 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

According to the police, the accused used a duplicate key to steal nearly 5 kilograms of gold ornaments from a jewellery store named ‘My Gold Point’ located in IC Colony. The stolen gold is estimated to be worth around ₹7.88 crore in the market. The theft took place during the intervening night of January 13 and 14.

Police said the main accused have been identified as Ganpat Chadana (26) and Kishanlal alias Bhairu Bagalal Rebari (21), along with two others. During interrogation, crucial information came to light, leading to the recovery of 3.1 kilograms of stolen gold so far.

In a shocking revelation, police investigations have confirmed insider involvement in the theft. Two employees of the jewellery shop, who were entrusted with the responsibility of closing the store and safeguarding the keys daily, allegedly misused the trust placed in them. They reportedly made duplicate keys and stole the ornaments kept in the showcase before fleeing.

Suspicion arose after the two employees suddenly went missing following the incident. Police scanned CCTV footage from the surrounding area and intensified their probe. Senior officials stated that the identities of both employees had already been established.

Under the supervision of DCP Sandeep Jadhav and Senior Inspector Harish Gawli, the MHB Colony Police team apprehended one employee and his associate. During questioning, the involvement of a minor also surfaced.

After committing the crime, the accused fled to Rajasthan. Upon receiving inputs about their location, a police team rushed to Rajasthan. However, after learning about the police movement, the accused abandoned their village and hid in forest areas. With the help of CCTV tracking and thermal drone surveillance, the MHB Police managed to trace and arrest the accused before bringing them back to Mumbai.

Police have recovered 3.1 kilograms of gold so far. However, one of the employees remains absconding and is suspected to be in possession of nearly 4 kilograms of stolen gold. Investigators have also found that the absconding accused received logistical support, including vehicles and other arrangements, to aid his escape.

Police teams are conducting raids to trace the absconding accused and his accomplices. The sensational theft has created panic among jewellery traders in the area.
