Mumbai: Undertrial Prisoner Attacks Policeman at Arthur Road Jail Gate, Constable Injured

A dramatic incident was reported at the main gate of the Arthur Road Jail on Tuesday night, where an undertrial prisoner created a ruckus and attacked a police constable on duty, leaving him seriously injured.

According to police sources, the incident occurred when an undertrial prisoner was brought back to the Arthur Road Central Jail after a court hearing at the Dindoshi court. The accused, identified as Lokendra Udaysingh Rawat, allegedly became aggressive at the jail entrance and assaulted a police constable by headbutting him in the face.

The injured constable, Hani Baburao Wagh (30), posted at LA Division-2, Tardeo, stated in his complaint that he was deployed at the main gate of Arthur Road Jail for a 24-hour duty starting from 8 am on January 27, 2026. At around 9 pm, constables Suresh Mali and Sachin Chavan arrived at the jail with the undertrial prisoner after his court appearance.

Police officials said the prisoner was visibly angry and began sitting on the platform inside the jail premises, hurling abuses at the police personnel. When Constable Wagh asked him to remain calm and refrain from using abusive language, the accused allegedly became more aggressive. Despite repeated attempts by other officers present at the spot to pacify him, the prisoner refused to comply.

As Constable Wagh approached to restrain him, the accused suddenly rammed his head into the constable’s nose with force. The impact caused profuse bleeding, and the constable reportedly felt dizzy following the assault. In his statement, Wagh said the accused not only attacked him but also obstructed official duty by pushing and misbehaving with other guards present at the gate.

Following the incident, on the orders of jail authorities, the accused was immediately taken to JJ Hospital for medical examination. The injured constable was also provided medical treatment and later approached the police station to lodge a formal complaint.

A case has been registered against the accused for assaulting a government servant and obstructing official work. Further investigation in the matter is underway.
