City records 8 murders, 18 domestic violence cases on an average per month

Nagpur has been in the news for various crimes in last couple of years. Compared to year 2020, there has been an increase in some serious crimes this year. This year, an average of eight murders were committed every month, while 18 cases of atrocities against women were registered. These figures are higher than last year’s average. The information has been revealed in an RTI.

Abhay Kolarkar, an RTI activist from city, had approached the Nagpur police under RTI. He had asked questions about the murders, atrocities against women, theft, robbery, chain snatching etc. that took place in Nagpur between January 1, 2020 and May 31, 2021. According to official information received from the Nagpur police Crime Branch, a total of 172 cases of atrocities against women were registered in the city in 2020. In the first five months of 2021, the number was 93.

In 2020, there were 97 murders in the city, compared to 41 between January and May 2021. The city also saw an increase in theft incidents this year. Last year, 2,066 theft cases were registered, while this year, 990 crimes were registered in just first five months. An average of 198 thefts took place every month.

Increase in other crimes as well

In 2020, 4,544 other other crimes were registered. In the first five months of 2021, the number has reached 2,107. The average per month was 421, while in 2020 it was 378.
