Tarique Rahman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party secured victory from the Dhaka-17 constituency in the 2026 elections. After returning to the country in December, following over 17 years in self-exile, he appealed to party leaders and supporters to offer special prayers across the nation after the midday Juma prayers instead of holding celebratory rallies.

The polls, held on Thursday, 12 February, mark the first national vote since the 2024 mass uprising and are seen as a significant turning point for Bangladesh’s democratic future. Rahman himself secured emphatic wins in both constituencies he contested: Dhaka-17 and Bogra-6.
The election took place under heavy security, with nearly 900,000 personnel deployed nationwide. Despite pre-poll concerns regarding stability and a "tsunami of disinformation," the Election Commission described the polling day as largely peaceful, barring minor disruptions.
