Chennai steps up voter awareness drive ahead of Tamil Nadu Assembly elections

Chennai, April 20 In a concerted effort to promote ethical voting practices and achieve 100 per cent voter turnout in the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the Greater Chennai Corporation has launched an extensive voter awareness campaign across the city.

According to a press release by the civic body, a series of awareness programmes is being organised across all 16 Assembly constituencies under the Chennai district. The initiative aims to educate voters on the importance of fair participation in the democratic process while encouraging maximum voter turnout.

As part of the campaign, authorities have rolled out a diverse mix of outreach activities designed to engage citizens from different walks of life. These include traditional Tamil cultural performances and folk art displays, awareness messages at bus stops, voter education quizzes, and mobile campaigns using public transport buses.

Additionally, special voter awareness songs are being broadcast through theatres, radio platforms, and social media channels to ensure wide reach and impact.

Taking the campaign to the streets, a major awareness rally was flagged off near Napier Bridge in Chennai in collaboration with ride-hailing platform Rapido.

The rally featured around 300 two-wheeler motorcycles, each carrying banners promoting voter awareness and participation.

The event was formally inaugurated by R. Sugandhi, the Returning Officer for the Chepauk–Triplicane Assembly constituency.

The rally commenced from Napier Bridge and proceeded towards Vivekananda House, drawing public attention along its route. Participants displayed awareness banners on their vehicles and actively engaged with the public by distributing pamphlets.

In a notable outreach effort, rally participants also interacted with shopkeepers and visitors along Marina Beach, spreading awareness about the importance of voting and encouraging citizens to exercise their democratic rights responsibly.

Officials said the initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic participation and ensuring that every eligible voter is informed, motivated, and empowered to cast their vote in the forthcoming elections.
