A tragic incident occurred were an 80-year-old woman was trampled to death by a tusker near the Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh's Bahraich district. This incident occurred on Sunday and is the third such incident in the region since last month.

Victim identified as Kuwariya Devi, a resident of Bhawanipur village in the Katarnia forest range, went for grazing her goats near the forest. At around 11:00 am she got attacked by the elephant.  Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Apoorva Dixit told PTI, "The woman had gone looking for one of her goats that had strayed into the forest area. She was attacked and trampled by a tusker, leading to her death on the spot."

A woman was killed by an elephant despite attempts by farmers to scare it away; the same elephant had damaged crops earlier that day. Police and forest department officials arrived, sending the body for post-mortem. Immediate assistance of Rs 10,000 was provided to the family, and formalities are underway to release an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh.

The incident has caused panic following two similar attacks in February: a 45-year-old woman killed on February 14 and an elderly ascetic killed on February 15.
