Navi Mumbai: Mango Lovers Rejoice! Alphonso Prices Crash in Vashi's APMC Market
The Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) market in Navi Mumbai’s Vashi, known as the main wholesale fruit distribution centre for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, is currently experiencing a consistent increase in the arrival of Alphonso mangoes. This surge has helped ease prices after an expensive beginning to the season. Traders have observed that the growing supply is gradually bringing balance to the market. The improved availability is providing relief to buyers who were earlier affected by limited stock and high rates. As more consignments reach the market, the overall situation is becoming more favourable for both traders and consumers alike.
According to traders operating at the Vashi APMC market, premium Alphonso mango boxes are now being sold in the range of Rs 2,000 to Rs 6,000, depending on factors such as fruit size and quality grade. Each box usually contains approximately five to nine dozen mangoes. This reflects a significant price drop compared to February and March, when restricted supply and weather disruptions had driven prices beyond Rs 8,000 per box. The correction in pricing is largely attributed to improved arrivals, making the fruit more affordable and stabilising trading activity in the wholesale market.
The recent increase in supply is mainly due to fresh arrivals from major mango-producing regions like Ratnagiri and Devgad. Traders have reported that the quality of the fruit has also improved noticeably. The mangoes are now arriving with proper ripeness, displaying the characteristic saffron hue and rich aroma that define premium Alphonso varieties. This improvement has boosted buyer confidence and demand in the market. The better-quality produce, along with increased quantities, has contributed to a more stable pricing environment, helping restore normalcy after the earlier supply constraints that had impacted both traders and consumers.
The 2026 mango season had initially faced a delay of nearly three weeks due to unusual winter weather conditions in the Konkan region, which disrupted the natural flowering and harvesting cycle. However, with production now gaining momentum, the supply chain is recovering steadily. The improved flow of mangoes into the market is benefiting wholesalers and retailers, who are now able to manage inventory more efficiently. As the season progresses, market conditions are gradually returning to normal, allowing businesses to operate more smoothly and ensuring that consumers have better access to fresh Alphonso mangoes.
The recent decline in wholesale prices is expected to soon influence retail markets across Mumbai and Thane, making Alphonso mangoes more accessible to the general public. Despite this, traders anticipate that prices will remain relatively stable due to the upcoming festive demand during Akshaya Tritiya on April 19, when mango purchases traditionally increase. While the current rates offer better value compared to the start of the season, traders suggest that the best time for consumers to buy will likely be between late April and early May, when peak harvest is expected to further boost supply and improve affordability.
