Who Is Sujata Patil? Meet Navi Mumbai’s New Mayor After BJP’s Mayoral Win
Sujata Suraj Patil of the Bharatiya Janata Party has been elected as the new mayor of Navi Mumbai after the mayoral polls held on February 5. She secured the post by defeating Shiv Sena’s Saroj Rohidas Patil in a contest that reflected the BJP’s numerical strength in the civic body. Alongside her victory, the BJP also strengthened its leadership grip as Dashrath Bhagat won the deputy mayor’s position, overcoming Sena candidate Akash Balkrishna Madhvi. The results underlined the ruling party’s dominance in the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation and marked another setback for the opposition in the city’s local governance politics.
Sujata Suraj Patil is currently serving as a BJP corporator and is known to be closely associated with the party’s organisational structure in Navi Mumbai. She is the wife of Suraj Patil, a senior BJP functionary who has built a reputation as a loyal party worker with considerable grassroots support in the region. Despite her recent rise to prominence, Sujata Patil is only a second-term corporator, making her comparatively less experienced than several other senior leaders within the party who were also seen as potential mayoral candidates.

Her selection for the mayor’s post was reportedly influenced by BJP leader Ganesh Naik, who chose her over more seasoned party colleagues. The decision highlighted the importance of loyalty and trust within the party’s internal dynamics. The move came as a surprise to many BJP corporators, as several senior women leaders were believed to be strong contenders for the role. According to reports, most corporators were informed about the final choice only on the morning when nominations were officially filed, leaving little room for internal debate or discussion.
The BJP’s victory was widely anticipated, given its strong majority in the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation. The party currently holds 65 seats in the 111-member civic body, ensuring a comfortable advantage over its rivals. However, the outcome also triggered criticism from opposition parties, including the Shiv Sena. Opposition leaders accused Ganesh Naik of making unilateral decisions and sidelining alliance partners within the Mahayuti, alleging that the mayoral selection process lacked consultation and consensus among coalition members.
