With an eye on the upcoming assembly elections, the Ashok Gehlot government has decided to give government residential accommodation on rent for as low as Rs 300 per month.

These will be flats built under the affordable housing scheme and the rental agreement will also be structured in such a way that the tenant will own the property after 10 years and pay the balance of its current value.

According to reports, if you want to avail this scheme, your annual income should be less than Rs 3,00,000, as only families with annual income below Rs 3 lakh are eligible for this scheme.

Properties constructed under affordable housing schemes have been lying vacant for years. The plan is to use them to serve the weaker sections of Rajasthan. Congress has implemented this scheme in the background of elections.

According to a senior Urban and Housing Department (UHD) official, more than 7,000 1 BHK flats in multi-storey buildings (ground + three floors) are vacant in Jaipur and another 14,000 flats are vacant in seven other cities.

Ajmer and Alwar districts in the state have a large number of such vacant properties. A press release issued by the government said that all basic facilities like roads, electricity, water etc. have been made available at the place by the concerned civic bodies.

However, consumers will have to bear the burden of water and electricity bills according to usage. These houses will be allotted on first come first served basis. An additional benefit of this scheme is that if one pays the balance of the current value of the property, they will be allowed to purchase a flat after 10 years.

This means that their rent paid for 10 years will be treated as interest free principal. The current price of these units is Rs 4 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. An official said that the rent of Rs 300 for 10 years would be Rs 36,000.
