Amaravati, July 15 The Andhra Pradesh government's decision to implement 10 per cent Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) reservations in college admissions and government appointments has been welcomed by the Reddy community.

Reddy Sangam President D.N. Reddy on Thursday said a huge number of educated youngsters used to be dejected by the lack of opportunities but this is set to change with the implementation of this new quota.

Alluding to Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, he said that "if a ruler's intentions are good, people can live happily".

Agriculture Minister Kurasala Kannababu called the move a "historic step" and said that the decision was taken after extensive deliberations.

The Chief Minister always aims to take measures which benefit the highest number of people, he said.

"This reservation will apply to all categories of people belonging to unreserved categories hitherto... to all the poor people in the unreserved castes. There is no sub-categorisation," said the minister.

He also noted that EWS reservation with an income limit of Rs 8 lakh is being implemented for state posts by removing some conditions put by the Centre.
