‘Lockdown in India’ Trends on Google: Why Searches Spiked on March 24

Lockdown in India: Six years after Narendra Modi announced a nationwide shutdown to curb the spread of COVID-19, online searches for “lockdown in India” have surged again — not because of a health emergency, but due to a mix of remembrance and rising global anxiety. The spike in search interest occurred overnight across major metropolitan areas as well as smaller towns, despite no official announcement or indication from the central or state governments about any new restrictions.

On March 24, 2020, PM Modi declared a strict 21-day lockdown across India as cases of the novel coronavirus, first identified in Wuhan, began to rise rapidly. The unprecedented move brought daily life to a standstill, emptied streets and triggered a mass migration of workers returning to their hometowns. Six years on, those memories appear to be resurfacing. Data trends show a renewed interest in lockdown-related searches, coinciding with the anniversary of the announcement.

At the same time, global developments are adding to public anxiety. Ongoing tensions in West Asia, following military actions involving the United States, Israel and Iran have raised concerns about supply chains and energy security

The surge in searches also followed PM Modi’s address in Parliament on March 23 and 24, where he drew parallels between the COVID-19 pandemic and current disruptions to global energy supply chains. He described the situation as a test requiring the same level of collective patience, unity and preparedness that marked India’s response during the pandemic, while urging citizens not to panic.

“Because of this war, the difficult global situation may continue for a long time. Therefore, we must remain prepared and stay united. We have faced such challenges before as well by staying united during the coronavirus pandemic. We must remain very careful and alert. Some people will try to spread rumours to take advantage of the situation. We must not allow such people to succeed," he said. “All agencies responsible for ensuring law and order have been put on alert, including coastal security, border security, and cyber security," the Prime Minister added.
