The Pundliknagar police have arrested two individuals for snatching mobile phones from pedestrians engaged in calls while walking at night.
The accused have been identified as Vishal Shirale (19, Ambedkarnagar), and his accomplice, a minor, as confirmed by Senior PI Krishna Shinde. City recently witnessed surged in phone snatching were seen in hotspots such as Vedantnagar, Kranti Chowk, Cidco, Satara, N-1, N-4, Pundliknagar, Jawaharnagar, and MIDC Waluj have been particularly affected. The latest case occurred on March 9 at 9.40 pm near Pahade Corner in Pundliknagar, where Rishikesh Sonni (25) fell victim to two motorcycle-borne snatchers who grabbed his phone and fled. Acting on his complaint, Inspector Krishna Shinde, PSI Arjun Raut, and Assistant Constable Sunil Mhaske launched an investigation.
CCTV footage leads to swift arrest
Surveillance footage provided crucial leads, capturing clear images of the suspects. Analysis of their movements and the bike's details pointed investigators towards Ambedkarnagar. Confidential sources further helped in identifying Vishal as a prime suspect. Two days ago, police apprehended him while he was working as a laborer in the Jogeshwari area of Waluj. A search of his belongings led to the recovery of eight stolen mobile phones, all taken within the last two months.
Influence of Criminal Associates
Vishal, previously unlisted in police records, reportedly fell under the influence of delinquent peers and drug abuse. Seeking quick cash, he resorted to mobile theft, executing crimes using a sports bike borrowed from a friend. Law enforcement officials emphasized the growing concern of first-time offenders engaging in such activities due to negative peer influence.
