Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar

Thieves tampered with an ATM machine and withdrew Rs 40,000 using the stuck card of a senior advocate. The incident took place on the afternoon of January 19 in the Dashmesh Nagar area.

Advocate Nebhan Milyamal Chanchlani (Pratapnagar) had gone to the SBI ATM centre at Dashmesh Nagar on January 19 afternoon to withdraw cash. However, his card got stuck inside the machine, bringing the transaction to a halt. Chanchlani immediately went to a nearby bank branch to seek assistance. By the time he returned to the ATM centre along with bank staff, an unidentified person had withdrawn Rs 40,000 in cash from his bank account using the same card. In this connection, Chanchlani lodged a complaint with police inspector Sangram Tate of Osmanpura police station. Based on the complaint, assistant police inspector Shivaji Chaure registered a case.

What exactly happened?

According to the police, the thieves had tampered with the ATM machine in advance so that cards would get stuck. When Chanchlani inserted his card and attempted the transaction, an accomplice of the thieves was present inside the ATM centre. He allegedly observed the PIN, and when Chanchlani went to the bank to seek help, the accused used the same card to withdraw Rs 40,000 in cash.
