Aurangabad, Nov 7:

Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University (BAMU) had published an advertisement in September inviting applications from colleges to start a research center. However, the colleges did not respond to the call. Till date, the university has approved research centers in only 62 affiliated colleges out of 453.

The university has 453 affiliated colleges under its purview. According to the rules of University Grants Commission (UGC), students in the affiliated colleges will no longer be able to do research work under the guides unless there is a separate research center in the college. Similarly, there should be post graduate courses in the respective colleges and there should be two accredited teachers teaching these courses. Colleges can start research centers with two research guides, laboratories, well-equipped libraries and two research assistants. The UGC had sought applications from the colleges till September 30. The university management council then passed a resolution directing colleges to apply for a research center at any time of the year. However, there has not been much response from colleges yet.

Student capacity for research

The number of students for research in these centers is 10 students for science courses, 20 for social sciences courses and 50 students for the research center in the university.

The UGC''s guideline that students can only do research work with mentors working in college having research centers has raised concerns among many guides in the university. When asked, pro vice chancellor Dr Shyam Shirsath said that the management council had appointed a sub-committee under the chairmanship of the pro VC. Some recommendations have been made in the recent sub-committee meeting. The decision will be taken in consultation with the vice-chancellor.
