“Behind the white coat lies not just a stethoscope, but also a poet who captures words; while listening to the pulse, he also reads the pain.” With these words, a conference commenced in the city on Saturday. A beautiful confluence of hands devoted to medical service and minds enlivened by the touch of literature marked the enthusiastic beginning of the first all india medical literature and culture conference.

The conference has been organised by the Indian Medical Association Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar branch at Manthan Hall of MIT Engineering College. The event began with a book procession. District collector Deelip Swami and education officer Ashwini Lathkar were present as chief guests. On the occasion, IMA president and conference welcome president Dr Anupam Takalkar, secretary Dr Yogesh Lakkas, conference working president Dr Shahaji Taur, former president Dr Yashwant Gade, Dr Datta Kadam, Dr Asavari Takalkar, Dr Geetesh Dalvi, Dr Sanjay Patne, Dr Ujjwala Dahiphale, among others, were present. Prizes were also distributed to students who won painting, essay, and elocution competitions organised as part of the conference.

Only 17 doctors present out of 1,700

The district collector said, “There are 1,700 doctors in the IMA, but it pains me that only 17 doctors are present at this conference.” He added that the majority of attendees were students, and remarked that if there had been a lavani performance by Gautami Patil, the hall would have been full.

‘Not everyone we meet is a saint…’

During the poetry session, Dr Anand Kale presented the poem, “To lighten the burden on my head, I stepped out of the house; walking down the road, I entered a barbershop.” Dr Iqbal Minne recited, “Not everyone we meet is a saint; though I realise this, I still get deceived every time.” Dr Amarja Nagare, Dr Renu Boralkar, and Dr Prakash Gurutwad also presented their poems. The marathi ghazal session titled Ghazal-e-Ishq added further depth to the ambience of the conference.

130-Kg patient Finally Gets a Gown

In the literary reading session, Dr Abdul Majid narrated how he made special efforts to arrange a treatment gown for a 130-kg patient dedicated to social service, and the joy it brought to the patient. Dr Balaji Asegavkar spoke about doctors’ love for music through Singing Doctors. Dr Ganesh Kute and Dr Vikram Lokhande also participated. In the elocution competition on Fast Food: Curse or Boon?students conveyed the message, “Avoid pizza and burgers; eat green leafy vegetables.”

Inauguration today

The conference will be inaugurated on Sunday at 11 am by novelist Vishwas Patil. This will be followed by a live interview of Padma Shri awardee Jabbar Patel and the presentation of the IMA Navratna awards.
