Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:
Inspired by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar’s call to “Educate, Organise and Agitate,” students from underprivileged backgrounds are increasingly making their mark at leading global universities. Ambedkar, who studied at Columbia University and the London School of Economics, continues to inspire generations to view education as a powerful tool for social transformation.
Many such students not only excel abroad but also return to India, taking up roles across government and private sectors. Beyond building careers, they are contributing to employment generation and broader social development, reflecting the idea of giving back to society.
Several returnees have started scholarship guidance initiatives for students in rural and marginalised communities, helping them access opportunities for higher education overseas. At the same time, informal support networks among students abroad are making the transition easier for newcomers.
Government-backed schemes such as the Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj Overseas Scholarship, along with initiatives by SARTHI and Mahajyoti, have enabled many students to pursue education abroad. In addition, several international universities and organisations offer fellowships, expanding access further.
Entrepreneur Siddharth Ahivale, who returned after working overseas, now runs a venture that has created employment opportunities. IT professional Shilraj Kolhe notes that global exposure helps develop a broader perspective on social, economic and professional challenges.
Education expert Anup Kumar highlights that studying abroad provides an open environment for holistic growth, especially for students who may face social barriers. He advises students to focus on quality education, strengthen their English proficiency and explore global fellowship opportunities.
As more students step onto the international stage, Ambedkar’s educational legacy continues to shape aspirations and contribute to a more inclusive and progressive India.
