Maharashtra extends electricity duty exemption for Marathwada, vidarbha industries

The Maharashtra government has extended electricity duty exemptions for industries in Marathwada and Vidarbha until 2029, offering much-needed relief to businesses struggling with high power tariffs. Mahavitaran, the state’s electricity distribution company, issued a circular on February 28 confirming the decision and outlining the process for claiming the benefit.

The move is part of the state government’s 100-day action plan and comes after years of protests from industrialists, who argued that Maharashtra’s high electricity rates made it difficult to compete with industries in other states. Business groups had repeatedly raised concerns with the CM and the Industry Minister, demanding an extension of the existing exemption.

The government first introduced the electricity duty waiver in 2014, valid until 2019. However, under pressure from industrial bodies, the exemption was extended further. Now, with Mahavitaran proposing another tariff hike, industries are once again gearing up for protests.

Relief only for manufacturing units

The exemption applies strictly to manufacturing industries. Businesses like cold storage and laundries are not eligible. To claim the benefit, companies must submit a self-declaration form. Industrialists have welcomed the decision, calling it a crucial step in keeping Maharashtra’s industries competitive.
